COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation’s annual Fit Fest kicked off at Southern Hills Community Center with free fitness activities, health resources and community services — engaging veterans, families and residents. More free events are scheduled through December.  KSLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Brig. Gen. Joseph Bailey Camp No. 5 will dedicate a marker on March 28 at 1 p.m. at 2327 Highway 175 in Pelican (15 miles south of Mansfield) to honor Union Army units from the April 9, 1864 battle, and the ceremony is open to the public.  KTBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lawmakers in Louisiana are reviewing education bills including one to raise teacher pay to exceed the Southern-regional average by 2030 and others that expand teacher leave and student support. The session runs until June 1 and covers proposals that will affect both educators and families.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Apartment asking rents in Shreveport fell 11% since last February, with listings now at a median of $975 from $1,093 based on new data by Zumper. One- and two-bedroom prices followed a downward trend, remaining well below state and national medians.  Shreveport Times

  • Calvary boys basketball lost a state championship game to Metairie Park Country Day on Saturday at Burton Coliseum in Lake Charles — point guard Tyrone Jamison scored 20 as the Patriots won 58-49 for their sixth title in seven seasons.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • LSU Shreveport's men's basketball team beat Tougaloo (94 to 88) at The Dock on the LSUS campus on Friday, March 13 and advanced to round 2 of the NAIA tournament.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • The Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters lost 43-38 to Missouri State in the CUSA Women’s Championship game Saturday, Mar. 14 — ending a 19-game winning streak and a 15-season run without an NCAA berth.  Shreveport Times
  • LSUS Pilots clinched a berth to the National Tournament in Kansas City on March 19 following a 70-66 win over Texas Wesleyan at The Dock; star Khi Wallace scored 23 points and dedicated his play to his late cousin.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
