- ➤ Providence House, North Louisiana’s only homeless shelter that houses families together, held a graduation ceremony for ten families who met six requirements such as maintaining a positive and cooperative attitude—gaining employment and reaching education and budgeting goals. - ➤ Shreveport Police arrested two women in separate child abuse/neglect cases when officers took Nicole Frederick on March 26 after a 10-year-old reported she had left home without returning and later learned his school enrollment was missing—while Lisa Pittman was arrested on March 27 after a runaway teen and three other foster children reported harsh treatment at her home. - ➤ Taco Wars will return to downtown Shreveport on April 26 at the Municipal Auditorium for a taco and salsa festival where 14 local taquerias compete for the Golden Taco and Golden Molcajete awards—attendees can sample salsas, vote for their favorite, and purchase food and drinks using a ticket system. - ➤ A new study found that fewer Louisiana high schoolers took internships and apprenticeships than students in neighboring states, with only 5% earning credits and just 3 per 1,000 completing an apprenticeship in 2023—figures that lag behind other parts of the South. State education officials will roll out a new accountability system next school year to boost work-based learning while proposals to consolidate tax credits aim to spur additional local business participation. - ➤ Social justice advocates spoke on a proposed amendment to expand juvenile felonies — voters will head to the polls today to decide the measure. KSLA
- ➤ Louisiana voters will decide on four constitutional amendments today that affect the state’s courts, taxes, juvenile crime laws and judge elections. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.—if approved, the amendments will let lawmakers change legal rules including expanding specialty courts, adjusting tax policies and allowing more young offenders to be tried as adults. - ➤ The Shreveport Downtown Development Authority, police and club owner Chelette Holden have partnered to boost downtown safety by stationing extra officers in two key areas from 10 p.m. to 3 a.m. in response to late-night violence — two men were killed and two others critically injured on March 22, and another person died in January.
