COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Highland residents oppose a proposed gas station on Kings Highway that plans to sell alcohol (they worry it could change the neighborhood’s character).  KSLA
  • Downtown Shreveport’s Bakowski Bridge will be illuminated blue — a symbolic display for World Autism Day scheduled for April 2 to raise awareness for autism.  KSLA
  • A woman in Blanchard has launched the town’s first baseball team for kids with disabilities — designed to boost confidence and skill-building. The team will hold practices at a local field and plan games in the coming weeks.  KSLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Entergy Louisiana and Meta announced Friday, Mar. 27 a plan to add seven power plants, 2,500 megawatts of solar, and 240 miles of transmission lines in Richland Parish — expected to save customers $2.65 billion and create jobs, alongside Amazon’s new data center near Shreveport.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Bossier and Caddo educators were named as semifinalists for Louisiana’s Teacher and Principal of the Year awards by the Department of Education. The honorees from Benton High, Bellaire Elementary, C.E. Byrd High, and Northwood High were recognized — their work reflects exceptional classroom leadership and student growth.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New seismic monitors were installed in Red River Parish after a historic March 5 quake to help scientists record small aftershocks and map fault lines near Coushatta. The USGS and Tulane teams upgraded existing sensors and set up new stations to improve data collection for future hazard assessments.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Roads in Shreveport remain closed due to ongoing water and sewer main repairs; the water department says the 6900 block of Buncombe Road (closed for up to seven days) and parts of Murphy Street following a water main break have restricted access.  Shreveport Times
  • Shreveport officials announced a revised trash pickup schedule for Holy Week that will alter normal service across the city.  KSLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Airline High School honored baseball coach Toby Todd on Saturday after he reached his 500-win career milestone during a 5 to 2 home victory over North DeSoto that ended an eight-game win streak; his record now stands at 503 wins after 25 years of coaching.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
