CULTURE NEWS

  • Local residents and history enthusiasts are commemorating the 162nd anniversary of the Battle of Pleasant Hill in Pelican this weekend. Today events include camp tours and historical demonstrations at 11 a.m. followed by a reenactment at 2 p.m. at the historic site ($5 admission, children 5 and under free).  KTBS
  • The Caddo Parish Commission awarded local film professional Dother Sykes IV a Key to Caddo Parish for his work in nearly 30 film and TV projects such as Civil War + 12 Years a Slave + The Walking Dead + Queen and Slim including the Oscar-nominated film Sinners.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSUS shows rising retention rates after launching revamped support like first-year seminars and a tutoring app. Over 72% of Fall 2023 students advanced to year two and nearly 65% remained in the third year (up from previous averages) to better support transfer, low-income, and first-generation students.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana still prohibits recreational marijuana today, though medical use remains allowed for qualifying patients. State law permits cannabis purchases from licensed therapeutic marijuana pharmacies for eligible patients (those with debilitating conditions as certified by a doctor).  Shreveport Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • Oak Grove junior Caroline Bradley was named Farm Bureau Insurance and LSWA Miss Basketball on April 10 after averaging 27 points, 16.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game last season. The team, returning nearly every player, will aim to win its first girls basketball title in 67 years.  Shreveport Times
  • Luca Golden, a standout sophomore for Loyola, returned to the field after surgery to treat a rare arm condition — he posted a .385 average and a 1.85 ERA this season as coaches carefully eased him back into play.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
