BUSINESS NEWS

  • Marilynn's Place reopened in Shreveport under new ownership yesterday. Managing partner Bob Thames and his group kept the restaurant's New Orleans-style cuisine while updating the menu with local brands and planning a grand opening party soon.  Shreveport Times

CULTURE NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers approved HB-9 today to honor a Shreveport-born stuffed shrimp dish created in the 1950s, and local restaurants like Eddie's Seafood will be featured at the Stuffed Shrimp Festival on May 10 at 101 Crockett Street.  KTBS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • A new study by LSU Shreveport shows that 51.3% of local renters spend over 30% of their income on housing, making them the second-most burdened in the state & low-income households hardest hit. The survey warns that a shortage of affordable units worsens the problem.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Louisiana Board of Elementary and Secondary Education approved new K-12 literacy standards that emphasize phonics, grammar, and cursive writing to enhance fundamental skills. The updated standards will take effect for the 2027–2028 school year following feedback from educators, parents, and school leaders.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Senate Bill 304 will let Louisiana’s public universities choose alternatives to SACS accreditation + join the new CPHE. Gov. Jeff Landry and education leaders say the shift seeks to lower costs and improve efficiency in higher education.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Tuesday, Apr. 14, the House Education Committee advanced a bill that would require TOPS recipients to repay funds used until they lose eligibility, excluding Honors and Excellence award recipients, and the repayment rules apply only to students graduating high school during or after the 2025-2026 school year.  KSLA
  • Northwestern State University welcomed new members into its Purple Jackets and Blue Key societies to kick off Honors Week, with key officers (Madelynn Misuraca and Cailen Wiltcher) guiding selections from Shreveport, Morgan City and other areas.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers advanced a bill that would open a recreational alligator hunting season for 5,000 lottery-selected hunters with a two-gator limit. If passed by the full House, the first season could start Oct. 1 to manage the state's alligator population (over 3 million).  Shreveport Times
  • Tax Day is today as residents must file their annual returns by the April 15 deadline (a state requirement).  KSLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • LSU Health Shreveport is offering free head and neck cancer screenings on April 22 at 8 a.m. at the Head & Neck Cancer Clinic in the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center while running national clinical trials to catch cancer early.  KTBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • I-Bowl will host its 15th annual Youth Football Clinic at Independence Stadium on Saturday, June 6 from 8-11 a.m. for boys and girls aged 5 to 13 (registration is limited to 400 participants, with free lunch and a t-shirt provided).  Shreveport Bossier Journal
