ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • After a Wednesday bus 201 fire and explosion at North Hearne and Forum Drive in west Shreveport that allowed the driver and 11 passengers to evacuate safely, SporTran completed overnight inspections on seven of its 40 CNG buses—resulting in morning service delays until all vehicles are cleared.  KTBS

CRIME NEWS

  • A Shreveport man, SirElderick Deon Hays, was sentenced to 130 years in prison — 40 years for manslaughter, 75 for armed robbery, and 15 for possessing a weapon — after he robbed Xavier Griffin of his rifle and shot him near Lakeside Garden Apartments.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Darrell Draughn, a death row inmate, is in a court hearing today—he is asking to withdraw his execution order.  KSLA
  • Damien Monte Johnson—a Shreveport man charged with second degree murder for a July 2022 shooting death—was arrested in March after he nearly beat his girlfriend to death. The delay in his arrest has raised concerns over miscommunication between police and prosecutors as they work to improve their notification process.  KTBS
  • SirElderick Deon Hays—a 25-year-old from Shreveport—was sentenced on April 16 to 40 years for manslaughter, 75 years for armed robbery, and 15 years for firearm possession—130 years in all and a $5,000 fine—for shooting Xavier Griffin in 2021 during a struggle over a rifle near Lakeside Garden Apartments.  KSLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shreveport Police Department is moving 120 administrative staff from the Texas Avenue headquarters to temporary offices at 1120 South Pointe Parkway this month due to safety concerns and aging facilities. The department will relocate remaining patrol officers by July and the City Council will vote on a lease for more space on May 13 — ensuring the old headquarters is abandoned as planned.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • Randale Scott, a 7th grade math teacher at Youree Drive Middle School and pastor, has battled cancer before and will undergo surgery Monday, April 21 at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston—he still needs to raise about $12,000 to meet his $25,000 out-of-pocket cost for treatment.  KSLA
