CRIME NEWS

  • A Shreveport woman, Destane Glass, received an additional 11 years 3 months on Thursday for leading a bank fraud that used a local call center to create over $2.1 million in counterfeit checks, making her total sentence 14 years 4 months—she was also ordered to pay $539,578 while co-defendant ZarRajah Z. Watkins was sentenced to over three years.  KTBS
  • A Shreveport man, Donovan Phillips, 46, was sentenced to life in prison with hard labor & no chance of parole on April 30 for repeatedly sexually assaulting a young girl from age 7 to 12 and must register as a sex offender.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Shreveport Regional Arts Council’s 39th ArtBreak festival is open to the public today through May 4 and features over 3,000 works of art, student performances, competitions, and master classes. The festival also introduces a new sensory room—designed to help those who feel overwhelmed—to promote inclusion.  KTAL
  • Sir Charles Jones, a renowned blues and Southern soul singer, will perform his farewell show in Shreveport on July 12 at 8:00 p.m. at the Municipal Auditorium — the concert will also feature special acts by Avail Hollywood, Big Kue, Badd Newz, Miss Lady Blues, and Myia B Music.  KTAL
  • The 21st Annual Highland Jazz and Blues Festival presented by Ambetter Health will take place Saturday, September 13 at Columbia Park in Shreveport’s Historic Highland Neighborhood — the event featuring three stages with headliner Kenny Neal and other local acts along with a children’s area, pet zone, food trucks, and free shuttle service. A poster contest for local juniors and seniors was won by DaMetrius Haggerty of Northwood High School, who received $500 for his design.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Graduation ceremonies for Caddo Parish seniors will be held from May 13 to May 16 at the Shreveport Convention Center. Each high school—such as North Caddo High School on May 13 at 7 p.m. and Southwood High School on May 14 at 8:30 a.m.—will have its own scheduled time.  Shreveport Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport’s water system earned an F grade in 2024—dropping two points from 2023 due to aging infrastructure and financial challenges. Director William Daniel said improvements like rebuilding water towers are underway, and the state health department confirmed that a failing score does not mean the water is unsafe to drink.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
