  • The Community Foundation of North Louisiana announced that Give for Good raised $2.53 million through 8,708 gifts from 4,207 donors for 222 nonprofits in its 12th year (this success reflects strong local support). Since 2014, the annual online fundraiser has raised nearly $25 million to help transform communities.  KTAL

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Tuesday, May 6, a severe storm in Caddo Parish caused a large oak tree to split a home nearly in half on LaLaurie Lane—fire crews arrived just after 3:30 p.m. and residents and pets escaped unharmed while debris and tree limbs scattered through the area.  Shreveport Times

  • El Compadre Mexican Restaurant and Seafood reopened on May 7 on East Kings Highway after 11 months of construction and a pause that cut revenue by 25%.   • Shreveport Police arrested Lejonkica Sharp on April 29 on the 1700 block of Caldwell Street after video showed her trying to hit six elementary students—she now faces six counts of aggravated assault linked to an incident involving her child.  KTAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Father Peter B. Mangum of the Shreveport Diocese reported live from Vatican City for KSLA as the Papal Conclave began yesterday, and he shared key details of the historic gathering — a central moment in the church's leadership process.  KSLA
  • Shreveport chef Neima DiGrazia from Abby Singer's Bistro will appear on Food Network’s Beat Bobby Flay on May 29 at 8 p.m.—she combines West African flavors with a local spirit in her dishes.  KSLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • SkyWest Airlines has chosen Shreveport Regional Airport as its new maintenance base and will create 525 jobs—150 direct and 375 indirect—for the region. City leaders and local partners announced the move to boost the economy and support a skilled workforce.  KTAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSU Health Shreveport will hold its largest graduation ceremony on Saturday, May 10 at 10 a.m. at the Shreveport Municipal Auditorium where 242 students from the Schools of Applied Health Professions, Graduate Studies, and Medicine will receive their degrees; Mrs. Esperanza Moran will help confer diplomas and Dr. Steven Conrad will deliver the commencement speech (including awards for 156 Doctors of Medicine, 46 Doctors of Physical Therapy, and others).  KTAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The DOTD will begin a surface abrasion treatment on the I-220 and I-49 interchange Sunday night—this work is set to add friction and reduce crashes in an area known as the Shreveport Triangle. The work will run nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. until May 15 and then resume May 18 until May 22 weather permitting.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
