  • The local community mourned the death of Reverend Monsignor Earl V. Provenza, who died early Thursday and was known for renovating the Cathedral of St. John Berchmans and establishing Mary Queen of Peace Parish. Funeral details will be announced soon by the diocese.  KTBS

  • Albert Bazaar, a Washington Parish man from Angie, is detained on federal charges for trafficking over 1,800 turtles illegally poached from Florida — federal authorities say he falsified captive-bred documents.  KSLA

  • LSUS commencement speaker Pam Atchison (2026 Champion of Culture) will address graduates on May 15, marking a new chapter after retiring from SRAC in 2025 while she continues to boost downtown with projects like Central ARTstation. ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Louisiana reached over $4 a gallon on Thursday when AAA reported a 20-cent weekly increase amid rising fuel costs due to the ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran. Prices remain lower than the national average ahead of summer travel.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • CBER data shows that the local economy remained steady in Q1 (stable housing, growing tax collections and robust casino revenues) while rising energy prices may drive higher inflation in coming months. EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana Tech matched its record when seven teams earned a perfect 1,000 APR score for the 2024-25 academic year in Ruston. Teams in men’s and women’s basketball, bowling, cross country, softball, tennis, and track & field reached the milestone.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • LSU and Southern University are joining a U.S. Census Bureau project to track if Louisiana graduates match their degrees with job placements — the study will use anonymous data to help colleges gauge education’s impact on career success.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport Sen. Sam Jenkins sponsored Senate Bill 157 (a proposal to give public school employees six weeks of full paid parental leave after childbirth, adoption, or fostering) and the measure cleared both Education and Finance committees on May 7; it will soon be debated by the full Senate to boost teacher retention and improve work life balance.  Shreveport Times

  • Ochsner LSU Health and Southern University Shreveport have joined forces to offer free dental care for local residents, with services starting soon in community clinics.  KSLA
