CRIME NEWS

  • Shreveport Police responded to a child neglect case near Sussex Avenue and Corbett Street on May 6 at 5:30 p.m. after a school bus driver found a naked three-year-old running in a rainstorm and later sheltering on a bus—officers discovered multiple children in very unsanitary conditions at a home where Kaneesha Williams was taken into custody and charged with four counts of Criminal Neglect of Family—and Child and Family Services along with juvenile detectives secured the scene.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • On Thursday afternoon, Shreveport police arrested 19-year-old Zhamya Howard after a domestic dispute outside Peaceful Rest Missionary Baptist Church on St. Vincent Avenue led to a gun being discharged in a car—resulting in a 21-year-old man sustaining a non-life-threatening leg injury and charges of domestic abuse battery.  KTBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Dr. Alexandria Mikaberidze of the Noel Collection showcased the 17th-century manuscript 'La Florida del Inca', copied in 1616 and donated by Judge Gayle Hamilton’s family, during a ceremony at LSUS. LSUS Chancellor Robert Smith said the unique document will be studied by scholars — it adds an important resource to Shreveport’s historical heritage.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

  • Austin Small, a Shreveport native who once slept in his mother’s car, was elected president of a national youth leadership organization representing over 80,000 students — he was selected from 1,300 candidates — and becomes the first African American male to lead the Jobs for America’s Graduates National Career Association.  KTBS
  • Captain Shreve High School was named a 2024-25 Project Lead The Way Distinguished School—one of only four high schools statewide recognized for its commitment to delivering real-world STEM learning experiences.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Shreveport native Sam Burns opened the PGA Tour’s Truist Championship on Thursday by shooting a 65 that matched his best spring round and extended his streak of rounds under 70; his score placed him in an 11th-place tie at the Wissahickon Course at the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and his tee off was later broadcast on ESPN+. The PGA Championship is set for next week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte and Burns is expected to compete.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
