- ➤ The Shreveport Fire Department is inviting residents to tour fire stations, meet firefighters and learn about Camp I’m Still Me, a free summer camp for children ages 5-17 who sustained burn injuries. The event will take place on Saturday, May 31 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at Fire Station 1 at 263 N. Common, Fire Station 8 at 2756 Greenwood Road and Fire Station 17 at 2901 Baird Road — offering families hands-on fire safety tips. KTAL
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Federal prosecutors indicted Kevin Terrrell Lewis a/k/a Kelvin Lewis and his brother Larry Dewayne Lewis on charges of robbery and conspiracy to use, carry, brandish and discharge firearms during violent crimes in Shreveport on December 23, 2024 and January 22 — Kevin faces charges for using a firearm during a robbery at Pull-Up Liquor while Larry remains in federal custody from a February 5 indictment for firearm possession, and each could receive at least a 10-year sentence and fines up to $250,000 if convicted. - ➤ Louisiana Film Prize announced a new partnership with Fort Worth Film Commission that will give the winning short film a theatrical release in Fort Worth—complete with a red-carpet premiere, a week-long run, travel support and Oscar eligibility for the 2026 season. - ➤ On May 9, the second class of NWLA FAME finished its two-year Advanced Manufacturing Technician program at BPCC and most graduates received full-time job offers from sponsors such as Arq, Inc. and Frymaster. - ➤ On May 13, the House Agriculture Committee voted for a GOP bill to cut up to $300 billion from SNAP by making states help pay and raising work requirements to age 64. The bill—which tightens paperwork rules and cuts eligibility—may affect about 867,000 Louisiana residents who rely on SNAP. Shreveport Times
- ➤ Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry appointed Courtney J. Burdette as Secretary of the Department of Environmental Quality to balance economic growth with environmental protection — she returns with 10 years of agency experience and vows a people-first approach to tackle the state’s complex challenges. - ➤ Northwest Louisiana law enforcement agencies gathered Wednesday morning in Bossier City Civic Center — where a rifle salute and a riderless horse marked the ceremony — to honor fallen officers with a joint proclamation from Mayors Chandler and Arceneaux.
