- ➤ Fairfield Magnet School student Sanil Savita Thorat was named Louisiana’s Elementary Student of the Year on Monday, May 18 by the Louisiana Department of Education—recognized for his academic, leadership and community service accomplishments. - ➤ School districts are seeking local funds to boost teacher pay after voters rejected a measure that would have used state money for raises; in Vermillion Parish, Superintendent Thomas Byler said covering a $2,000 stipend would cost $2.3 million plus other districts are considering similar options. - ➤ Today, the Greater Shreveport Chamber is hosting the 2026 National Civics Bee Regional Competition at LSUS University Center Theater—marking its first time in Caddo Parish. - ➤ The Louisiana Legislative Auditor found that nine substitute teachers in Caddo Parish were paid nearly $25,000 for work they did not perform and have since been fired and placed on a do-not-hire list — the audit recommends strengthened internal controls at the school board. KSLA
- ➤ Nine substitute teachers were fired after a Caddo School Board audit found nearly $25,000 in misused taxpayer funds last fiscal year, and the board repaid $8,225 & set new controls in place after discovering the issue in April 2025. KTBS
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ CDC research shows that mosquitoes are the world’s deadliest animal and are common in Louisiana with 60-75 species that can spread West Nile, dengue, Zika and chikungunya. Residents are advised to use EPA-approved insect repellent and remove standing water from around their homes. Shreveport Times

- ➤ Calvary Baptist led the 2026 District 1-2A baseball awards on May 18 when senior Cooper Holmes and junior Brody Gray were named co-MVPs and freshman Levi DeMoss was honored as Offensive Player of the Year (Holmes hit .467 and DeMoss .391) in recognition of their standout season.
