ACCIDENTS NEWS
- ➤ A major crash Monday morning on W. 70th in Shreveport sent one person to a local hospital with serious injuries, police confirmed. KTBS
CRIME NEWS
- ➤ The Shreveport Police Department—working with city officials—arrested nine individuals between May 15 and May 18 for illegal squatting under a new ordinance designed to stop unlawful occupancy. Shreveport Bossier Journal
- ➤ Police said an altercation during a televised basketball game at a sister's home on Yancey Street around 7:20 p.m. led to Jack being shot and later Ware being shot by multiple officers, while Louisiana State Police investigated the incident that brought Shreveport’s homicide count to 13 this year. - ➤ A Shreveport man was sentenced Monday to a ten-year term of hard labor with no chance for probation or parole for sexually abusing a teenage victim over four years — his sentence will be served consecutively with time for a prior similar offense and will require him to register as a sex offender for 15 years. - ➤ Volunteers for Youth Justice has been named the beneficiary of Artport 2025—a pop-up gallery event at Shreveport Regional Airport scheduled for fall that will support programs for children and families in crisis across Northwest Louisiana. KTAL

- ➤ A Tulane University study shows that more than half of low-income Louisiana kindergarteners do not have basic reading skills and only 20% catch up by third grade. Researchers say children who attend pre-K are twice as likely to be school ready + a new state law may force third graders with low scores to repeat the year + urging earlier support for young learners. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Louisiana Legislature considered Senate Bill 99 on May 19 in the House Transportation, Highways, and Public Works Committee where Shreveport’s mayor and city officials testified against banning speed enforcement cameras outside school zones—city leaders have already expanded the program in 12 local areas. The bill will now head to the full House for a vote while maintaining cameras only in school zones and letting some areas keep red light cameras. KSLA
- ➤ Representatives from SWEPCO and Southwest Power Pool spoke before the Public Service Commission on Monday about two power outages in April that left thousands without power for hours. Local leaders including Haughton Mayor Hunter Timms and Commissioner Foster Campbell demanded a full report and possible compensation+ they warned that similar outages could be deadly in extreme summer heat.
