CULTURE NEWS

  • Mudbug Madness festival will return to Festival Plaza from Friday, May 23 to Sunday, May 25 with live music, crawfish contests and food and drinks. Admission is free on Friday until 5 p.m. and one-day and three-day passes cost $10 and $15.  Shreveport Times
  • Shreveport chef Niema DiGrazia from Chez Niema was selected to compete in the 19th Annual Louisiana Seafood Cook-Off on June 26 at the Pontchartrain Center in Kenner + he will vie for the title of King or Queen of Louisiana Seafood against 11 chefs from across the state.  KTBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Caddo Parish School Board met Tuesday (May 19) to debate aligning its voting districts with those of the Caddo Parish Commission to ease voter confusion. If approved, the change will require a formal redistricting process.  KTBS
  • The Greater Shreveport Chamber hosted the 2026 National Civics Bee Regional Competition Tuesday at LSU Shreveport (the first time the event was held in Caddo Parish), where over 100 middle school students submitted essays on community issues; Bhavik Kondala won $500 and advanced to the Louisiana State Civics Bee Finals.  KTBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Louisiana Medicaid may soon cover FDA-approved weight loss pills for obesity under Senate Bill 433, which passed key committees. If approved by the House and signed by Gov. Landry, coverage will begin on Jan. 1, 2027 — although funding has yet to be secured.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Commissioners in Caddo Parish will vote this week to propose a November election asking voters to approve $60 million in bonds for a 12-acre multisport complex in Shreveport; if approved, the facility will boost sports tourism without raising property taxes.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Tomorrow at 8 a.m., the State Bond Commission will meet in Senate Committee Room A-B (at the State Capitol) to review a $25 million bond proposal aimed at funding acquisition, conversion, renovation, and reserve funds for downtown Shreveport's historic Petro Tower.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Today, the Shreveport Airport Authority and City received a $10,000 beautification grant to enhance the airport entry with native perennial plants that boost curb appeal and air quality, with officials thanking Keep Louisiana Beautiful and the Office of the Lieutenant Governor for their support.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

  • Fishmasters released a ranking of Louisiana's top 30 fishing lakes on May 19, highlighting Toledo Bend Reservoir, Caney Lake and Lake D'Arbonne, where anglers can use public boat ramps and fishing piers across the state.
