Good morning, Shreveport. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 22nd of May.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • One person died in a fiery multi-vehicle crash on I-49 just south of Shreveport around 5:00 p.m.—the outer northbound lane closed after a gray truck hit a white SUV near the Southern Loop exit, causing the truck to catch fire and forcing the SUV occupants to refuse help.  KTBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • Zydeco musician Jeffery Broussard will release his new album, Bayou Moonlight, May 23rd through Fairgrounds Records. The album blends Creole roots with New Orleans brass and is recorded with his new group—the Nighttime Syndicate.  Shreveport Times

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport’s famous giant crape myrtle, Bayou View, bloomed on May 21 at Akins Nursery and Landscaping, drawing visitors to admire its 41-foot height and 48-foot spread during its brief one-week display. The tree, imported in the 1950s and noted for being the largest of its kind, remains a celebrated local natural treasure.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux testified in Baton Rouge on Monday in opposition to a state bill that would ban traffic cameras outside school zones. He said the cameras are needed to help enforce traffic laws amid a shortage of police officers—adding about $2 million in revenue annually to the city.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Developers behind a planned Stonewall apartment complex tried to change the multi-family housing rule but the Town Council denied their request on May 13 after residents protested concerns over overcrowded schools, highway traffic, and flooding. The Lawlers said they will explore other avenues to build one- to three-bedroom units starting at $1,400 with water and sewer rates included — a move that could boost local property tax revenue.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Today, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development marked one year of work on the Jimmie Davis Bridge replacement project in south Shreveport-Bossier, where crews are building a new four-lane bridge north of the old two-lane span using temporary trestle bridges to move equipment. The project also involves realigning Jimmie Davis Highway with widened roads and new ramps—set to improve traffic flow for over 30,000 daily vehicles when the bridge opens in early to mid-2027.  KTBS
  • The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate will soon add Justin O’Connor— a Report for America corps member from Rochester Beacon—to its team of 11 journalists as he covers Bossier City and Bossier Parish government. He said he will expose accountability issues and fill news gaps, a move that is part of a national effort to boost local news coverage.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
