COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Gary Lash, CEO of the YMCA of Northwest Louisiana, announced his retirement after decades of service that cleared 600K dollars in debt and added three facilities. A retirement celebration is set for noon on Friday, June 5 at the Lash Family YMCA on Ellerbe Road.  Shreveport Times
  • The Northwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery Foundation is calling on community members to volunteer for Memorial Day flag placement at the cemetery (7970 Mike Clark Rd. in Keithville) today starting at 1 p.m., and a Memorial Day program is scheduled for Monday at 11 a.m.  KTBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Mudbug Madness Festival is coming to Shreveport to celebrate local cuisine and traditions while engaging the community in a fun, cultural experience. Event details on location and timing will be announced soon.  KSLA
  • Astronomy enthusiasts are hosting a free star party tomorrow from 8-10 p.m. at Worley Observatory (located eight miles south of LSU Shreveport) where the public can view the moon, Venus, Jupiter and deep-sky objects, and a raffle for a digital smart telescope is available.  KTBS

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Shreveport Regional Airport is expanding service by continuing Nashville flights, starting a Destin route today, launching Chicago flights on Oct. 25, and making Orlando flights year-round next Thursday. It introduced the SHVip Visitor Pass to let non-travelers visit restaurants and art displays and added a free nursing station.  KTBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Louisiana lawmakers advanced a budget on Thursday that removed the annual $2,000 teacher and $1,000 support staff stipends, leaving educators to face lower pay despite rising student scores. The bill now goes to the full Senate then the House, with education advocates urging a review of the change.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • The Prize Foundation in Shreveport—leading a program that has trained over 100 locals in film roles—prepares for upcoming productions by 50 Cent while Caddo Parish leaders review nonprofit spending as the program plans to expand its training efforts.  KTBS
  • After a report of a weapons threat, Booker T. Washington High School went on lockdown today at 2:30 p.m., with over 20 Caddo Sheriff units patrolling the area until the lockdown lifted at 2:50 p.m., and classes resumed on the final school day.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • North DeSoto High School students built a new greenhouse today in Stonewall to gain real-world skills through tasks such as tearing down an old structure and handling wiring, plumbing and siding, while teachers say the project prepares them for careers beyond the classroom.  KTBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Shreveport Airport Authority unveiled an expanded airport gate at Shreveport Regional Airport today — a move set to ease passenger flow and boost travel capacity.  KSLA
  • The Caddo Parish Commission voted to place a $60 million indoor sports complex on the November ballot; the nearly 170,000 sqft facility will host regional sports tournaments to boost local tourism + stimulate economic growth. Officials expect to reveal additional details before early voting begins in October.  KTBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • A national shortage of breast biopsy needles delayed a Shreveport patient's procedure at Ochsner LSU Health St. Mary Medical Center when a bent needle halted a test on May 12. The devices (linked to a recall) are expected to see supply improvement by September.  KTBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • Parkway product Mikaylah Williams will join Team USA at the FIBA 3×3 World Cup in Warsaw, Poland starting June 1 as she and LSU teammate MiLaysia Fulwiley are among four players competing against 20 nations in pool play, with matchups against Hungary, Australia, Mongolia, and Spain.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • LSU Shreveport athletics director Lucas Morgan won his fourth RRAC AD of the Year after leading the Pilots to five conference championships and hosting NAIA postseason events. The university will begin an $8.5 million renovation of its Health and Physical Education Building and launch a women’s volleyball team next season.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • On May 21, 2026, Cedar Creek and Glenbrook players earned spots on the All-District 1-1A baseball team as league coaches selected top talent; Cedar Creek's Kade Luker was named MVP after an 8-0 pitching record and a strong batting showing.  Shreveport Times
