- ➤ The Kiwanis Club of Shreveport-Bossier honored five community leaders at its annual awards luncheon—recognizing educator Chris Kourvelas, firefighter Aniyah Brown, lawperson Lieutenant Amy Bowman, and local leaders Nell Shehee and Don Hathaway—and celebrated their service that made a lasting impact on our area. CRIME NEWS
- ➤ A Shreveport man, Lloyd Tremaine Cooks aged 21, was found guilty of second-degree murder by a Caddo Parish jury after he killed Jeremy 'Ruru' Wyatt aged 31 during a drug deal at a local gas station on June 25th, 2022—Cooks admitted arranging the purchase and fired more than two dozen shots. - ➤ Shreveport will host several Juneteenth events, starting with a parade on June 14 at Veterans Park (beginning at 10 a.m.) and an art show at Riverview Hall from June 14-15, followed by a food truck night on June 19 with Black-owned vendors and a DJ. A festival with live music by Too $hort and Leela James begins on June 20, and a Day of Service on June 21 will focus on community cleanup (marking the anniversary of freedom for enslaved people). - ➤ Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington praised Detective Kelly Downey today for her key role in passing Louisiana House Bill 74, which lets survivors of domestic abuse disable remote tracking in their cars if they show proper court documents. Governor Jeff Landry signed the law yesterday after both legislative houses voted in favor—officials say the new law provides an important safety tool. Shreveport Bossier Journal
- ➤ Senator Bernie Sanders will visit the Municipal Auditorium — 705 Grand Ave — on June 21 as part of his Fighting Oligarchy tour, with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. The event will feature his remarks on campaign issues and continued voter engagement. KSLA
- ➤ The Louisiana Legislature approved a $51 billion state budget that includes $1.2 billion for road and bridge improvements, college campus upgrades, and extra funds to help pay for private schooling as well as higher payments to sheriffs for housing inmates — the House accepted Senate amendments with little drama on Thursday.
