  • Shreveport resident Elvira Helaire-Davis celebrated her 110th birthday Monday at her longtime MLK neighborhood home, where family and local leaders gathered to honor her rich life and the history she witnessed on Cooper Road. Although she was not well enough to leave her bedroom at the party, attendees recalled her as a living history book—her life marking important local milestones.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Local business owners and city officials are frustrated with the long renovation of the old Sheraton Hotel on East 70th in Shreveport. The hotel—affected by mold issues—may take months to finish, and council members will address concerns next month.  KTAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Jermaine Lavar Curtis, 44, was indicted on Tuesday, July 22 for second-degree murder for the fatal shooting on March 1 of Fabian Jenkins, 43, at a Hearne Avenue sandwich shop and for felony gun possession from a past conviction—he is in custody at Caddo Correctional Center awaiting trial.  KSLA
  • A Shreveport man, Jermaine Lavar Curtis, 44, was indicted by a Caddo grand jury for second-degree murder after he shot Fabian Jenkins in the neck outside a sandwich shop on Hearne Avenue on March 1 — Jenkins later died on April 23 at a rehabilitation hospital — and Curtis now faces additional gun possession charges due to his 2022 felony conviction.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • A Shreveport man, Andrew Drew Adaway, 37, was found guilty of fatally beating fellow inmate Bobbie Young, 72, at City Jail on June 3rd, 2022—he will return to court on August 7th for sentencing.  KSLA
  • Christopher Lee Thompson was arrested in Bossier Parish for stealing building materials valued at about $18K from a St. Jude Dream Home site after deputies found the items in a trailer he occupied illegally—he was booked on charges of burglary, unauthorized entry, and felony property damage, and the property has been returned to its owner.  KTAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Starting this school year, Louisiana school districts must install cameras in special-ed classrooms by next February under Act 479 and update restraint and seclusion practices for students with disabilities effective Dec.1—districts have until next May to submit revised policies while the state rolls out free crisis intervention training for school staff this fall.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Mayor Arceneaux visited the KSLA studio yesterday to discuss the Caddo Ready alert system—designed to deliver faster emergency alerts—and plans to address downtown homelessness. He said the city will work with local groups to support residents in need.  KSLA
  • Shreveport city council members are questioning how the Water and Sewerage Department selected contractors to repaint the city’s water towers and some want more input on future design decisions. Councilwoman Ursula Bowman said she felt the team did not fully follow professional advice — while Mayor Tom Arceneaux provided a four-page report on the process.  KTAL
