ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A head-on collision occurred at 10:16 a.m. Thursday on Greenwood Mooringsport Road—an 18-wheeler hit a pickup truck and seriously injured its driver, who was taken to Ochsner LSU—and authorities closed Hwy 169 north of I-20 near S. Lakeshore Drive until the crash site is cleared.  KTAL

  • Dripp Donuts and Chicken is reopening its Shreveport location this weekend in the former Sweetport building— the grand opening runs from 7 a.m. Saturday to 3 p.m. Sunday at 3301 Line Ave.— after a year-long hiatus during which it operated on a limited basis.  Shreveport Times

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Louisiana’s economy grew in the second quarter as it surpassed 2 million non-farm jobs, with major metro areas recording gains—healthcare added nearly 6,000 jobs while manufacturing also performed strongly. The report noted 51 straight months of job gains and a 5% drop in initial unemployment claims.  KTBS

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Maggie Lee’s Closet at Highland Center in Shreveport is holding its 13th annual free school uniform giveaway at 5 p.m. today—adults must bring ID and children must be with them—to distribute over 200 sets on a first-come, first-served basis. Donations of new or gently used uniforms will be accepted at local drop-off sites and Sportspectrum will support the effort by donating part of its shoe sale proceeds until August 31.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A July report by Southwest Power Pool found that a load shed on April 26 left about 30,000 customers without power in northwest Louisiana due to unexpected temperature spikes, scheduled outages, and limited transmission capacity—warning that the region will remain vulnerable until new generation or enhanced transmission capacity comes online. SWEPCO said it will work with grid operators to adjust maintenance schedules and improve forecasting to help avoid future outages.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Today, Caddo Parks and Recreation announced plans for a new $10 million Pickleball Park in Caddo Parish—designed to include a 6,000-square-foot clubhouse with two courts, 19 lighted courts including eight with shade, picnic areas, parking for 500 cars and new youth soccer fields by the YMCA. The project will also feature a championship court with seating for 1,000 spectators and a walking trail nearly a quarter-mile long.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • The Shreveport Police Department’s Central Records Office will close temporarily on Thursday and will reopen on Monday at 8 a.m. at its new location at 1120 South Pointe Parkway, Building A—this relocation is part of a plan to move personnel for a new permanent headquarters.  KTBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • Flesh-eating Vibrio vulnificus bacteria live in Gulf Coast salt water and can cause serious illness when open wounds contact warm seawater or when undercooked shellfish is eaten—Louisiana sees between five to 15 cases each year while Florida has experienced several cases with fatalities. Anyone who has symptoms like fever, nausea, or rapidly worsening wounds should go to the emergency room immediately.  Shreveport Times

  • Legendary high school basketball star Greg Procell visited the gym at Fairview-Alpha to remember his record 100-point game from 55 years ago and the humble start playing on dirt courts in Sabine Parish.
