  • On August 2, 2010, six African American teenagers drowned in the Red River, a tragedy that shook the community and spurred calls for better water safety. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Colorado State University experts released their final forecast yesterday, predicting a slightly above-average Atlantic hurricane season with 16 named storms and 8 hurricanes — Louisiana faces a 71% chance for storms, a 43% chance for hurricanes, and a 16% chance for a major hurricane tracking within 50 miles.  Shreveport Times

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today at noon, the Shreveport Police Department will host a Domestic Violence Awareness and Resource Forum at its headquarters on Texas Avenue to address the rise in domestic violence cases—community leaders and partner groups will share resources and legal support to help victims.  KTBS
  • Webster Parish Sheriff Jason Parker was unanimously elected as Sergeant-at-Arms on the Louisiana Sheriff’s Association Executive Board after the annual conference ended July 31 in Destin, Florida—he said his new role will guide decisions on budgeting, equipment, and legislative matters and may set him up for a future run for LSA President.  KTAL
  • Louisiana SNAP recipients will not be allowed to buy soft drinks, energy drinks, or candy starting in 2026 as the state limits these purchases to promote healthier diets. ASAP founder Omari Ho-Sang warned that the change may lead to further cuts in aid and stricter qualifying rules—pressuring residents in food deserts who rely on limited options.  KTAL
