Good morning, Shreveport. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 9th of August.

CRIME NEWS

  • Andre Deshun Gladney was found guilty of second-degree murder in Caddo District Court for killing his childhood friend Taurean Coleman on March 7 at a Shreveport basketball court at Anderson Island Park—jurors convicted him unanimously in under an hour despite his self-defense claim.  KTBS
  • Caddo Parish Sheriff’s deputies investigated a stabbing at Chavos Mexican Restaurant on S. Pine Street in Vivian—where two workers sustained non-life-threatening stab wounds after an altercation with customers—and two people were detained without charges filed at this time.  KSLA
  • Two brothers accused of a January Walgreens parking lot robbery and homicide now face an added federal charge for using a firearm during a crime of violence — authorities say they had already been indicted on robbery and conspiracy charges and could face life in prison and fines if convicted.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Red River United said Caddo educators who worked from 2013 to 2018 may have faced a pay gap after the district changed teacher pay from a system based on years of service to a step-based method. The school board noted it followed compensation guidelines and will consider a proposal for a $1,000 stipend for about 700 employees at its Aug. 19 meeting.  KSLA

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport police remind drivers to slow down in school zones as state law returns speed camera enforcement with clear yellow stripes—marking the zones—and dedicated signage; officers said fines begin at $150 and the cameras free patrol units to answer calls faster.  KSLA
  • Louisiana drivers must keep their phones away from their hands while driving since a new distracted driving law took effect last week—using hands-free devices is allowed. Gov. Jeff Landry expects the law to help lower auto insurance rates even though officers will only issue warnings until January 1.  Shreveport Times
  • At Thursday’s Caddo Commission meeting, local residents debated a proposed 19-court pickleball park on East Flournoy Lucas behind Kroger and the Lash Family YMCA—some worried about spending $10 million via revenue bonds while others argued it would boost sports tourism. The Long Range Planning Committee approved the plan again, and the commission will review it on August 18.  KTAL
