COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Shreveport’s Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office invites the community to join the My Brother’s Keeper initiative to end gun violence. The free event will be held tomorrow at Sheriff’s Safety Town from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. — featuring guest speaker Moms on a Mission and a Jeep Show by the Trail Lizards Jeep Club.  KTAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • On August 29–30, the Shreveport-Bossier African American Chamber of Commerce will host the Shreveport Kickoff Classic—an expo and tailgate at the Louisiana State Fairgrounds featuring exhibitor showcases, workshops, panel discussions, and networking mixers with free registration for nonprofits, $50 for members, and $100 for non-members. The event will conclude on August 30 with a closing ceremony that highlights the rising support for local businesses.  KTAL

CRIME NEWS

  • Police arrested Leavern Johnson on August 20 for his alleged role in a fatal pedestrian hit and run on Hearne Avenue — authorities continue to investigate the incident.  KSLA
  • A Dallas man—Joseph Martin Bryant—was found guilty by a unanimous Caddo Parish jury in a retrial for robbing and threatening to rape a Shreveport woman in August 2015; he will return on Aug. 27 for sentencing and could face 10 to 50 years for the attempted rape and up to 99 years for the armed robbery.  KTBS
  • Shreveport Police arrested Leavern Johnson, 29, on Wednesday in connection with Saturday’s fatal hit-and-run on Hearne Avenue that killed pedestrian Blake Tannen—he may face charges for felony hit-and-run and felony obstruction.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Shreveport Public Assembly and Recreation is launching the Tools for Teachers Supply Drive to collect erasers—clipboards—colored pencils—pens—and disinfecting wipes for local teachers. Donations will be accepted at any SPAR recreation center during regular business hours from September 15 to October 15.  KTAL
  • Caddo Parish schools will use AI in classrooms to improve learning for students and teachers. Pending school board approval, Superintendent Keith Burton said the system will help educators teach faster—ensuring quality instruction continues.  KTAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A problem with fiber service has taken down non-emergency lines for Shreveport Police Department, so residents can call 675-2129 for police, 673-6910 for internal affairs, 673-7257 for traffic enforcement, 673-7200 for investigations, 673-6950 for community policing, 673-7130 for jail, and 673-6140 for ABO—officials expect full service to resume soon.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Sen. Bill Cassidy announced that Shreveport and Vivian airports will receive federal funding through the Airport Improvement Program and the Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Act. The Shreveport Regional Airport will get $517,750 to reseal 34,000 square yards of pavement—while Vivian will receive $102,875 for land acquisition to secure its runway approach.  KSLA
