  • Bossier Parish Sheriff Julian Whittington visited Shriners Children's Shreveport this week to support the upcoming Kids Shoot for Youth Charities event on October 18—meeting patients like first grader Audrey Lester and presenting her with a temporary sheriff’s badge as encouragement. Proceeds from the event will benefit the hospital and other youth-focused organizations.  KTAL
  • Summer Grove Baptist Church in Shreveport is set to vote on the future of its building at the former South Park mall after 21 years of high upkeep costs—church leaders offered three options: stay, partially demolish, or move—and the congregation will decide today.  KTBS
  • My Brother’s Keeper event in Caddo Parish aims to reduce gun violence by gathering local residents and offering resources to prevent crime—organizers report community programs will be introduced to support safety.  KSLA

CRIME NEWS

  • Community members gathered at Mayhaw Circle to hold a candlelight vigil honoring LaBriesha Patterson—28-year-old mother fatally shot on Martin Luther King Drive on August 18 with four teenagers arrested in connection, and a celebration of life is scheduled for next Friday at Heavenly Gate’s Funeral Home on Jewella Avenue at 11 a.m.  KTAL

  • Shreveport artist Star Williams of Seize the Subsea is creating beautiful character designs for Geek'd Con 2025—her work highlights retro-style sci-fi themes for the ongoing event.  KSLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Calumet launched its Calumet Cares grant program to give teachers up to $1,000 for STEM projects with middle and high school students in Caddo, Bossier and Webster Parishes. The plant manager will review applications and pick one student next week — the program looks to spark local interest in science and technology.  KTAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Bloomberg Harvard fellow Rachel Fischer released a report last week that offers recommendations to improve Shreveport’s Block by Block initiative — the plan designed to reduce blight by streamlining data sharing and support for property owners. The report calls for better integration of city systems so that residents can get help more quickly with maintenance and repair issues.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • The Caddo Parish Sheriff’s Office will host a hands-on simulator course on distracted and impaired driving for 18–25-year-old drivers on Tuesday, August 26 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Sheriff’s Safety Town — 8910 Jewella Avenue — where participants will use goggles to experience the effects of unsafe driving.  KTAL

  • The Vampyre Court of Shreveport is raising funds for a foundation to combat and prevent suicide — fundraising began on August 23.  KSLA
