COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The YMCA of North West Louisiana secured $7.8 million for phase two of its new $9.8 million turf facility with eight fields on Knight Street—backed by private donors, the city and the Caddo Parish Commission—and expects the project to boost local business with an estimated $5 million economic impact.  KTAL

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A local partnership led by the Northern Louisiana Economic Partnership acquired the long-idle Libbey Glass plant in Shreveport and will redevelop the 850,000-square-foot facility off I-20 at Jewella Avenue into an advanced manufacturing hub that aims to bring 150 to 200 well-paying jobs — the project was enabled by a state grant.  KTBS

CULTURE NEWS

  • A celebrity chef BBQ event is set to take place at Prize Fest 2025 in downtown Shreveport, with Top Chef champion Tristen Epps hosting alongside local chefs who will prepare special chicken, beef, and pork dishes — tickets are limited to 200, costing $55 in advance and $65 at the door, and the event will run from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on October 17.  KTAL
  • Highland Open Studio Tour Sundays returns on Sept 14 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will let visitors explore four creative studios where visual artists, poets and musicians perform and sell their work — entry is free.  KSLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southern University at Shreveport is breaking ground on a $9 million health and wellness recreation complex that will offer a gym, health center, and meeting space — the project, funded with state dollars, will boost campus safety and serve the MLK area in northern Shreveport.  KTAL

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • A Shreveport resident said that litter on our highways is getting worse and a 2023 study shows North Louisiana has the most trash—mostly beverage containers. The state will use new funds and stricter enforcement to clear the roads and change the litter culture in our community.  KTAL
  • Climate change is making Louisiana summers hotter and deadlier as rising temperatures and high humidity led to 86 record heat-related deaths in 2023. Studies show that nights are getting hotter and heat waves last longer—factors that put people without air conditioning at greater risk.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The City of Shreveport is using $24 million from the CHOICE Neighborhood Grant to revitalize neighborhoods near downtown—efforts that have already begun.  KSLA
  • Mayor Arceneaux visited the KSLA studio on Sept. 10 to discuss a neighborhood grant and a sports program called Play Ball—he said additional details on funding and timelines will be shared soon.  KSLA
  • Shreveport City Attorney Marcus Edwards stated that the council’s electronic roll call voting system meets open meetings law by displaying each member’s vote in the official minutes—this means no changes will be made until a court rules otherwise.  Shreveport Times

  • Only In Your State has released a guide listing three top pumpkin patches in Louisiana where families can enjoy fall activities—DixieMaze Farms in Shreveport is open on weekends from Sept. 27 to Nov. 1 with free admission, Mrs. Heather’s Pumpkin Patch in Hammond runs from Sept. 24 to Nov. 11, and Houma Pumpkin Patch hosts special events on Oct. 18, 19, 25 and 26.  Shreveport Times
