COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Organizers of The Gala 2025 are asking community sponsors to support a free event for breast cancer survivors that will be held at Jade Events on October 12 at 4 p.m. Founded by Barbara Holmes, the event will honor survivors like Josette Franklin-Paysinger — a reminder that no one fights alone.  KTAL
  • The Louisiana Red Cross is urging Shreveport families to prepare for emergencies during National Preparedness Month by making plans and assembling a go bag—executive director Karen McCoy said neighbors should check on vulnerable residents and use the app for real-time alerts.  KTBS
  • Catholic Charities of North La. is hosting a community-wide diaper drive during Diaper Awareness Week — the event aims to provide needed supplies to local families.  KSLA

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shreve Memorial Library is hosting free events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month through October 15 with workshops, story time, crafts and food demonstrations offered at several branches—some events require registration.  KTAL

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Cross Lake boat launch on Lakeshore Drive will close from Sept. 22-29 for parking lot repairs – the project will use $230,000 raised from a 2024 bond issue to add parking and streamline access. SPAR said the upgrade will help manage the busy spot for local boaters.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • APEX Natural Gas plans to drill a well at the long-vacant Shreveport Country Club, and the energy department has planned three wells on the site although permits are still pending. Caddo Parish Commissioner Roy Burrell said residents fear noise—dust and traffic from drilling may affect the area.  KTBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • LSU Shreveport's director of sports medicine Meghan Neffendorf was named NAIA Athletic Trainer of the Year on Monday — the first trainer in the Red River Athletic Conference to win three times — and she has supported student-athletes in six sports and three club teams by streamlining insurance protocols to save time and money.  KTBS
  • Evangel quarterback Peyton 'Pop' Houston verbally committed to LSU after a standout season in which he threw for 4,480 yards and rushed for 690 yards—earning him Shreveport Times All-City Athlete of the Year. The 4-star recruit, ranked among the top 2027 prospects, had narrowed his choices before selecting LSU.  Shreveport Times
  • Shreveport area high school teams face a busy Week 3 schedule as Haughton will play Parkway in Bossier City in the BFF Bowl on Thursday—following the tradition of the former Brotherton Bowl rivalry. Mansfield meets Northwood on Friday while Booker T. Washington hosts Green Oaks in the Soul Bowl on Saturday at 5 p.m.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
