COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Nominations for the Virginia K. Shehee Most Influential Woman and Young Woman Awards are now open and will close Oct. 17—nominees are recognized for significant philanthropic efforts in the community. The awards luncheon is scheduled for March 5 at East Ridge Country Club and supports Holy Angels.  Shreveport Times

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Caddo Fire District #4 crews discovered flames at the Woolworth Road Landfill at 10580 Woolworth Rd using their thermal imaging drone just after 1 a.m. on Sept. 28 and firefighters from CFD 4, CFD 3, and CFD 6 responded with heavy machinery to cap and extinguish the fire as staff monitored the area with visible smoke and the cause remained under investigation.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • The SBC Zombie Walk 2025 will be held on October 11 in the East Bank District and Plaza from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.—offering live music, costume contests, a vendor market, and donation drives for food, blood, and spinal care. Local performers including Jasper Price and the Shreveport Bone Society will entertain visitors and provide fun activities for children and adults.  Shreveport's Secrets

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Caddo Parish Commission appropriation committee recommended funding for local nonprofits and community groups for the 2026 budget during a meeting at Government Plaza on Sept. 18, 2025 — their proposals are now set for review and adjustment before final approval in December.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Zachary A. Keller was sworn in on Monday morning as the new U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Louisiana in Monroe—he will now lead about 70 federal prosecutors across Shreveport, Lafayette, Alexandria, Monroe, and Lake Charles.  KTBS
  • Following a tragedy in Michigan, a June incident at Bellaire Baptist Church in Bossier City prompted local law enforcement to advise houses of worship to form security teams—Bossier Parish Lt. Neil Johnston noted the need for preparedness and the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office hosted a free safety seminar at University Church of Christ in Shreveport for interested parties to learn best practices.  KTBS

  • Olympic gold medalist Oksana Baiul announced she is moving back to Las Vegas after living in Shreveport for several years. She listed her 6,000-square-foot Highland mansion built in 1925 for $1,195,000—hosting a garage sale on Oct. 4-5 where she will sell personal and home items.  Shreveport Times

SPORTS NEWS

  • The SBJ Top 10 rankings for Week 5 show Parkway moved into first place with a 4-0 record—winning by a two-point vote margin—while Evangel and Airline dropped to second and third.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Parkway swimmer Hunter Hayden won the Shreveport Times Athlete of the Week 3 poll by receiving 6,138 votes—over half of the 11,871 cast among 14 high school athletes in North Louisiana. He will be awarded a sports backpack and gift card from sponsors Raising Cane’s, Cosse and Silmon Orthodontics, and the Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission.  Shreveport Times
  • Evangel beat defending District 1-5A champion Airline 51-49 on Friday night at Rodney Duron Stadium with a late scramble for a tying two-point conversion by quarterback Pop Houston and a decisive touchdown run by Damari Drake. Both teams fought hard and traded big plays throughout the game—showing a close and competitive contest until the final moments.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Evangel's win on Friday night ended Airline's 13-game streak when Demarkus Evans had 128 yards and two touchdowns—Evangel will now face Huntington on a short week. Other top schools like Parkway, North DeSoto, Loyola and Calvary won their games while Green Oaks lost to Union Parish, keeping the district race close.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Calvary’s Brady Martinez was named Football Athlete of the Week after receiving 41.7% of the 9,222 votes cast in an online poll against 14 other competitors. He will receive a sports backpack (with a gift card and swag from local sponsors) as his prize.  Shreveport Times
  • Week 4 prep football games in District 1-5A and 1-4A saw high scores as three 1-5A teams scored 40 or more and Booker T. Washington edged Bossier 42-41—showing a close game. District 1-2A play also featured North Caddo earning its first win over Magnolia School of Excellence and Calvary extending its win streak by defeating D’Arbonne Woods 37-15—demonstrating strong team efforts.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • North DeSoto’s Griffins won 52-26 against Northwood’s Falcons Friday night at Jerry Burton Stadium — they scored fast and kept a high tempo while coaches Dennis Dunn and Austin Brown noted the game’s tough pace and errors that cost Northwood.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Week 5 of Shreveport-Bossier high school football will feature marquee games—Evangel at Huntington at Independence Stadium on Oct. 2 and Captain Shreve at Airline plus Parkway at Byrd on Oct. 3—with top local players Miller Warren, Jackson Davis, Chase Williams and Kira Pea playing at home. All contests will begin at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.  Shreveport Times
