CULTURE NEWS

  • The LSUS Foundation will host the Balloon Glow Festival on Oct. 8 and offer free entry for LSUS students and children under 10 while providing paid VIP access — featuring cocktails, food, and a festival tee — as well as tethered balloon rides starting at 5:15 p.m. for general guests with a Club Level option from 4:30 to 5 p.m.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

  • Bill Sabo leads Shreveport’s economic development and uses his past in journalism to help local businesses grow—he believes learning new ideas and enjoying cooking bring a fresh spirit to the community.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Southwood High School in Shreveport is undergoing a cultural change with the (We Care) initiative that builds kindness and unity among students and staff. Principal Latoria Grant said extra activities and the Cowboys football team's win boosted school pride on campus.  KTBS
  • Christopher Barnard, a Captain Shreve High School graduate from Shreveport, shared his experience at Service Academy Day at Louisiana Tech on Sept. 27 to guide Naval Academy applicants. He is a midshipman at Annapolis + he studies electrical engineering and competes in triathlons, making locals proud.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At 12:01 a.m. today, the federal government shut down and many Barksdale Air Force Base employees face furloughs or delayed pay while active-duty members continue working under mission-essential status. Base leadership said families can get help from the Airman — Family Readiness Center as congressional negotiations continue with no clear path forward.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • The Shreveport Police Department announced that the Pastors on Patrol program will celebrate 25 years with an Anniversary Breakfast with Chaplains on October 2 at 9 a.m. at The Denny's on Mansfield Road— and a Celebration Service on October 26 at Lonestar Baptist Church to highlight its ongoing community support.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • The Shreveport City Council approved a new economic development district downtown on September 23 that will use a 2 percent local sales tax to fund redevelopment projects—rapper 50 Cent, whose G-Unit Studios purchased properties in 2024 for a film and entertainment hub, expressed support on social media.  Shreveport Times
  • Gov. Landry requested sending 1,000 National Guard troops to Baton Rouge, Shreveport and New Orleans to support law enforcement and manage events like Mardi Gras—local leaders voiced support while others expressed skepticism as they await more details on the plan and federal funding.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

HEALTH NEWS

  • On October 4 at 10 a.m., Shreve Memorial Library Hamilton/South Caddo Branch will host a free seminar on Medicare rights for seniors in partnership with local agencies RK Buchanan & Co. and Watley Insurance Group. The event will cover Medicare Parts A, B, and D plus Medicare Advantage and Medigap options to help adults 65 and older understand their choices.  KTAL
  • A free luncheon is set for Saturday, October 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport – St. Mary Medical Center where Dr. Sindhu Devarashetty explains early detection and treatment for breast cancer; attendees receive a goody bag and door prize entry.  KTAL
  • Albertsons recalled deli items sold in 15 states after a recalled bowtie pasta ingredient raised a listeria risk – customers were advised to discard or return the products while no illnesses were reported.  Shreveport Times

  • Calvary Baptist Academy's football team won 37—15 on the road against a previously unbeaten D’Arbonne Woods last Friday and moved up to fifth in the Week 5 Class 2A Top 10 poll. Evangel's win of 51—49 over Airline earned 10 points, placing the team three spots from the Class 5A Top 10.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
