CULTURE NEWS

  • Local Christian country artist Krystina Barnes signed a new record deal with CDX Records in partnership with The Orchard — Sony Music for global distribution. She visited KTBS 3 studio on Wednesday morning to perform, marking a new chapter in her career that blends country soul with modern Americana.  KTBS
  • BPCC Theatre will present 'An Evening with Edgar Allan Poe' on October 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, and 12 with Sunday shows from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and evening shows from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.—tickets are available for all shows.  KTAL

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Superintendent Keith Burton marks one year at the helm of Caddo Parish Schools with his contract extended until September 30—this follows a year that saw nearly 700 fewer students and required tough school consolidations. He plans to boost academic outcomes and support teachers as the district adapts to shifting enrollment and demographic changes.  KTBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the Shreveport Fire Department is partnering with the NFPA to promote Fire Prevention Week, which will take place October 5th-11th and focus on preventing fires from lithium-ion batteries in everyday devices. The department advises residents to use only approved chargers, follow safe charging practices, and recycle batteries properly to avoid overheating.  KTAL
  • The US Supreme Court will hold a merit hearing on October 15 in the case Louisiana vs Callais—where attorneys will submit supplemental briefs to answer four questions about a redistricting law and its impact on the Voting Rights Act. Officials such as Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Davante Lewis warn that a ruling against the law may set back progress for Black voters.  KTAL
  • Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux submitted the proposed 2026 operating and capital improvements budgets to the City Council on Wednesday. The operating budget is set at $709.4 million while the capital plan totals over $1.1 billion with funds for new projects and a 2% water and sewer surcharge to reduce blight—pending council review and adoption by Dec. 15.  KTBS
  • More than 30,000 military personnel and federal workers at bases including Barksdale and Fort Polk are missing paychecks due to the government shutdown that began on Sept. 30th. Essential programs like Social Security and Medicare will continue while new flood insurance policies are suspended—leaving many families to rely on savings until back pay resumes.  Shreveport Times
  • Shreveport Mayor Arceneaux and City Council Chairwoman Taylor voiced concerns yesterday about Governor Landry's request for National Guard troops, asking for clarification on the Guard's mission—its duties, coordination with local law enforcement, and expected duration.  KTAL
  • Shreveport Regional Airport conducted a full-scale emergency disaster drill on Oct. 1, simulating a plane crash, extraction of passengers and patient triage. Officials from the airport, CPSO, La. State Police, Barksdale Air Force Base and local responders evaluated the drill—measuring response times and coordination to meet FAA requirements.  KSLA
  • Shreveport officials said on Oct. 1 that they are reviewing how National Guard troops could be deployed after Gov. Landry requested their presence in several cities. Mayor Tom Arceneaux and Council Chairwoman Tabatha Taylor said they will work with law enforcement to ensure the Guard’s mission strengthens public trust—protecting rights and safety.  KSLA
  • Shreveport mayor Arceneaux and Council Chair Taylor met on Wednesday to discuss questions over a possible National Guard deployment requested by Gov Landry—officials say clear plans for the Guard’s duties, duration, and coordination with local police are needed to protect community trust while crime rates have fallen over the past two years.  Shreveport Times
  • Louisiana residents are facing disruptions from the federal government shutdown that began Oct. 1 — thousands of federal workers are furloughed while services such as flood insurance renewals, education grants, and port inspections are delayed. Homeowners may see stalled home sales as lapses in flood insurance affect new policies and renewals, and essential food and disaster response programs could also experience delays if the shutdown continues.  KSLA

HEALTH NEWS

  • Emily Kelley grew up with a family history of breast cancer and fought the disease after she and her mother were diagnosed, completing 19 rounds of radiation. Now she runs her nonprofit—My Pink Pep Squad—to push for earlier screenings and better rural access to care.  KSLA
