COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Family members reported complaints at Forest Park East Cemetery, noting tall grass, fallen tombstones, and crumbling roads while questioning if trust funds from plot sales were used properly—sparking concerns over upkeep. The cemeteries were sold in February and the new owner, Matthew Seyler, has begun cleanup and restoration as the state board will review unresolved issues in November.  KTBS

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Oct 4 at 3:42 p.m., the Shreveport Fire Department responded to a fire at the historic Shreveport Country Club on Espanade Avenue—over 75 firefighters worked to stop the blaze while investigators seek clues amid reports of recent vandalism.  KSLA

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Caddo Magnet High School’s JROTC Academic Team placed fourth in the National Leadership and Academic Bowl in Washington, D.C. after advancing through online qualifiers—cadets Caleb McDaniel, Michael Nix, Kate Kearney, and Ayan Bath earned certificates from Lt. Colonel Woods during a Caddo Parish School Board celebration.  KTBS
  • Caddo Parish Schools approved a $500K project to fix bathrooms that have troubled students and parents for years. Construction will roll out in phases this school year—starting with schools that received the most complaints, and new floors, partitions, and plumbing will be installed to keep the rooms odor free by spring.  KTBS

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Bossier Police Jury condemned over 10 properties last week—this included 18 overgrown lots owned by Shams Investment Inc.—to fight blight and protect public health and safety. Officials said they had reviewed each case carefully before moving the properties to condemnation hearings.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Today, amid the government shutdown, nearly 1,000 civilian employees at Barksdale Air Force Base have been furloughed and active duty airmen report without immediate pay plus several support offices are closed while essential services remain open. SPORTS NEWS

  • In Week 5 of Shreveport-Bossier high school football, Airline’s Kenny Darby caught 14 passes for 170 yards and rushed for 77 yards while scoring two touchdowns as his team lost 66-56 to Captain Shreve.   • Shreveport Times has named 15 high school defensive players from teams such as Haughton, Evangel, and North DeSoto for its Week 5 football poll — fans can vote online until Thursday evening and the winner will receive a prize package from local sponsors when announced on Saturday.  Shreveport Times
  • Voters in the SBJ Top 10 poll ranked Parkway 5-0 and Evangel 4-1 as the top local high school football teams at midseason—Loyola and Captain Shreve tied for third while Calvary, Northwood, Airline, Booker T Washington, Bossier and Huntington followed within eight voting points.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Voting is open today for Week 5 of the Shreveport Times High School Athlete of the Week for non-football sports with students from 15 northwest Louisiana schools—fans can vote online until Thursday and the winner will be announced Saturday with prizes from local sponsors.  Shreveport Times
