- ➤ The YMCA of Northwest Louisiana is still accepting donations for its Play Ball campaign as it collects funds to pay for a new baseball/softball complex that will host events starting summer 2026. - ➤ Geneva Moore, a 110-year-old lifelong resident and dedicated teacher, passed away recently as the city council honored her with a resolution on her 110th birthday Aug. 15. - ➤ Firefighters remained on the scene at the remains of the old Shreveport Country Club in the 3100 block of Esplanade Avenue after flames engulfed the building on October 5 — they had not yet cleared the site more than 24 hours later. Shreveport Times

- ➤ Alyson Humphrey-Smith from AC Steere Elementary in Shreveport was named one of 200 national quarterfinalists for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award after her students' 'Jambo Bwana' performance impressed judges—she was selected from over 2,000 nominations and will be honored during GRAMMY Week 2026. Her recognition brings local pride in a field where dedicated teachers make a lasting impact. KTBS
- ➤ Caddo Parish School Board approved a new plan that requires first graders to show reading mastery before moving on and set rules for using AI in class—aiming to shift focus from test scores to actual skills. - ➤ A government shutdown threatens to end enhanced ACA credits—forcing Louisiana residents to face much higher premiums as a couple earning $85,000 could see costs jump from about $600 to $2,000 a month. - ➤ SPAR is upgrading the parking lot at the Municipal Pier and Boat Launch at Cross Lake; crews had planned to finish last week, but the timeline shifted and the launch will reopen next week with a safer surface.
