COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Veterans Day, many restaurants in Louisiana will offer free meals and discounts for veterans-active duty soldiers as a way to honor their service. The specials include a free dine-in meal at chains like Chili’s and Twin Peaks and are available at 29 spots, with some offers running into the evening and next year.  Shreveport Times
  • Brookshire Grocery announced on November 3 that it will donate $500,000 to local food banks (Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma) to help families facing food insecurity during the government shutdown and SNAP pause. The funds will bridge the meal gap for communities served by its stores.  Shreveport Times
  • Elizabeth Arceneaux, Shreveport’s First Lady, shared her life story over lunch at Rhino’ Coffee downtown as she explained returning from Memphis nearly three years ago to support her husband’s campaign.   • Local groups organized a chicken plate sale on Sunday that raised over $6,500 to help Barksdale Air Force Base employees who missed pay during the shutdown.   • Rapper Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson hinted on Instagram on November 3 that he was working on expanding his downtown Shreveport property investments—his group spent nearly $2.4 million in cash on buildings and vacant lots since May 31, 2024.   • LSUS Pilots won 73-72 against Oklahoma City on Monday night in Richardson, Texas after Thaddeus Johnson hit a buzzer-beating layup; veteran coach Kyle Blankenship led the team to a 2-0 record with key help from Kiki Wallace, who recorded a double-double (17 points and 10 rebounds).  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott will visit Haughton High School on Thursday evening to dedicate the field at Harold E. Harlan Stadium—tickets cost $5 while Bossier Parish School Board workers enter free and K-12 students can win signed footballs, with the event set to raise funds for school athletics and improvements he helped fund.   • High school football Week 10 in Shreveport will see headlining district games as Parkway and Evangel will clash Friday at Rodney Duron Stadium—both teams remain undefeated in district play.
