Good morning, Shreveport. Here's your local news at a glance for Thursday, the 6th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Today, KRUE Events in downtown Shreveport hosts a free community meal giveaway from 5 to 7 p.m. at 830 Louisiana Avenue—its normal service will pause to provide meals while supplies last for families facing economic challenges. Volunteers and food donations are welcome—local support aims to serve as many neighbors as possible.  KSLA
  • The Christian Service Program is hosting its annual Poor Man’s Supper fundraiser on November 9th from 5 to 7 p.m. at 2346 Baby Street in Shreveport with $20 tickets that include a simple meal to raise hunger awareness — the group has served the community for 55 years by providing two hot meals daily, averaging about 1,500 meals a week and over 9,000 meals a month.  KTAL
  • Brookshire Grocery Co. is donating $500,000 to food banks in Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas and Oklahoma—helping families face rising hunger as SNAP benefits pause amid a federal shutdown. The funds will support food programs and holiday food drives running through Dec. 16 at participating stores.  Shreveport Times
  • United Way of Northwest Louisiana is asking Shreveport residents to support local nonprofits during the ongoing federal government shutdown — food banks and shelters are stretched thin as federal workers and struggling families need help with food, housing, and basic services. Catholic Charities and other groups are urging timely donations and volunteer efforts to keep essential services running — an effort that aims to strengthen the local safety net.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Est. Her Women’s Movement will host the free Dwell Prayer Retreat at Lake Bethlehem in Shreveport on November 8, featuring worship leader Kaitlin Ellis, speakers Pastor Maya Coleman and Keisha Simmons, and fitness coach Sweat with Jess. The retreat is designed to help local women reconnect with God and one another—offering time to recharge.  KTAL

CULTURE NEWS

  • Shreveport’s new public art installation, 'Be Kind,' is now on Greenwood Road at the Fairgrounds and invites visitors to step into the artwork to become part of the message of kindness. SPAR created the playful display to remind everyone that small acts can brighten the community — snapping photos with the hashtag #BeKindShreveport helps spread the message further.  KTBS

  • The Food Bank of Northwest Louisiana asked for $100,000 in emergency funding from Caddo Parish to help families and government workers facing food insecurity during the shutdown—Commissioners doubled the request to $200,000 on Monday and will vote on it today with a final vote set for November 20.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • The STARBASE program at Barksdale Air Force Base is at risk as government shutdown and past budget cuts threaten its STEM learning work. The Bossier School Board voted to keep the program running through December using local BEEF funds—though that support is not guaranteed when the government reopens.  KTBS

SPORTS NEWS

  • In his homecourt debut, Coach Moore led the BPCC Cavaliers to wins by beating Centenary JV 105–78 on Monday and Louisiana Christian JV 96–58 on Tuesday.
