COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Caddo Parish Commission will host an additional free holiday food distribution event on Saturday, Dec. 20 at multiple locations, including sites in Shreveport and Keithville.   • District Attorney James Stewart hosted the 8th Annual Christmas Bicycle Giveaway at Walnut Hill and J.S. Clark Elementary Schools, handing out over 200 bicycles to kindergarten students and sharing a message on school success.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

  • The Shreveport Diocese said that Rev. Charles Thessing, who pleaded guilty for animal cruelty in West Memphis last week, will not take the new assignment planned for Jan. 1 because he asked not to be considered for the post.  KTBS

  • A WalletHub study released on Dec. 16 found Shreveport ranked as the third neediest U.S. city after a 27-percent rise in homelessness and high rates of poverty, while New Orleans and Baton Rouge were ranked 10th and 11th, respectively.  Shreveport Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Fifth-grade students at several Caddo Parish schools celebrated graduating from the D.A.R.E. program, where they engaged in interactive activities and wrote essays on resisting peer pressure — a step that equips them with skills for healthy decision-making.  Shreveport Bossier Journal

  • Forecasts show that Christmas Day in Louisiana will be warm with temperatures in the 70s and little chance of snow — NWS forecasters noted that Santa may be taking a jet ski along the coast.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

  • State senators Pressly and Jenkins said LSU reorganization reduced the Shreveport medical school’s autonomy and may risk future funding and growth. They noted that local leaders and faculty were not consulted when the chancellor position was eliminated.  Shreveport Times

  • The Shreveport Police Department is asking for blood donations for a retired officer in serious need. Community members are urged to support this urgent request, as reported two hours ago.  KSLA

SPORTS NEWS

  • Bossier hosted its 34th annual boys soccer tournament last weekend with top teams from Monroe and Central Lafourche competing; Loyola’s Flyers won 8-1 and 4-0 before setting the stage for a high-stakes game with Bossier on Jan. 12 (St. Louis from Lake Charles plays Saturday).  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • LSUS men's basketball rallied from a 10-point deficit to beat Florida Memorial 94-88 Monday night (Hayden Brittingham had a double-double and Khi Wallace scored 20) to improve to 8-3. The Pilots will host a home doubleheader Thursday at 7:30 p.m.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
  • Louisiana Tech coach Sonny Cumbie announced the Bulldogs’ 2026 non-conference slate, including away games at LSU and Baylor and home contests against Army and Northwestern State in Ruston.   • On Saturday, the Ouachita Parish Lions won the Non-Select Division I state title by beating top-ranked Ruston 21-20 at the Superdome. Seeded 14th among 28 teams, they recorded an unlikely championship run.  Shreveport Bossier Journal
