CULTURE NEWS

  • Mardi Gras celebrations in Shreveport kick off with the MLK DreamFest from Jan. 15 to 24 and parade weekends on Jan. 17, 19 downtown, Feb. 7, 14 and 15 to Highland Historic District, with Fat Tuesday on Feb. 17 — a family-friendly tradition — drawing locals.  KSLA

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Sen. Cassidy & Sen. Thune introduced a bill that would require CBP to pay $38.5 million in accrued interest to U.S. agricultural producers, including $10.6 million for Louisiana’s crawfish industry, in response to Chinese seafood dumping where crawfish are sold below production cost.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
  • Nineteen states will raise their minimum wages to at least $15 starting Jan. 1 while Louisiana remains on the federal rate of $7.25 with no plan for a change.  Shreveport Times

EDUCATION NEWS

  • LSUS will celebrate its historic milestone by awarding more than 1,700 degrees to local and international students at commencement ceremonies in Brookshire Grocery Arena in Bossier City on Friday. The ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and LSUS alumnus Keith Burton will deliver the keynote address.  KTBS
  • Federal Judge Terry Doughty rejected a challenge by two Christian schools to block new private pre-K licensing rules, ruling that the law applies equally and safeguards child safety. Private schools must apply for licenses by Jan. 1 with extra time for site inspections.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Shreveport City Council overturned a denied appeal for a proposed data center in west Shreveport with a 7-0 vote on Thursday night (over 50 comment cards were submitted and minor disruptions occurred). Council members said they will notify the company and schedule more community meetings as details are released.  KTBS
  • Both lanes of I-20 westbound in Bossier City have reopened after two years of construction on a $128 million project, and eastbound lanes are expected to reopen this weekend (DOTD is finalizing ramp and signage work).  KTBS

HEALTH NEWS

  • U.S. News & World Report has ranked seven top nursing homes in Louisiana, including Progressive Care Center in Shreveport and Baton Rouge General Medical Center, all rated five out of five. The ranking was based on staffing, care quality, and health outcomes (from 266 facilities).  Shreveport Times
  • Louisiana has the highest flu and respiratory illness activity in the country, with rising emergency department visits + very high RSV levels detected through wastewater tests. Health officials advise residents to monitor symptoms and take precautions if needed.  Shreveport Times

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Dan Gill, a retired LSU AgCenter horticulture specialist, explains how to protect tropical plants after a recent freeze — when some areas saw temperatures around 30 degrees — advising to leave covers on or remove them as needed, move container plants indoors temporarily, and delay pruning until new growth appears.  The Shreveport-Bossier City Advocate
